Who we are
Welcome to The Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames – a living testament to the rich maritime history and heritage of London. Established in 1514, we are a venerable ancient guild (known as a ‘Company’) dedicated to upholding the traditions and values of those who have navigated the iconic River Thames for centuries.
With a legacy steeped in camaraderie and professional excellence, we continue to honour our historic roots while embracing the challenges and opportunities of the modern era.
What we do
Our core activities encompass providing fellowship amongst our Freemen, guiding apprentices through a comprehensive programme to become qualified Watermen and/or Lightermen, and acting as the trustee for our charitable endeavours.

Where we are:
Built for us in 1780, our purpose-built hall situated on the cobbled street of St Mary at Hill. This Hall is central to both the social heart of our Company as well as the base for all apprentice training, embodying our enduring commitment to both tradition and progress. We invite you to explore our elegant home —a testament to over two centuries of steadfast presence in St Mary at Hill.
