Island of the Medway & Estuary Lecture – Tuesday 19th March 2024

Adam Taylor a keen canoeist, has competed in the Great River Race several times in the Percy Sergeant, the islands and salt marshes of the Medway estuary are his passion.

This lecture draws on many sources of the Medway; census records, photos, Victorian technical plans, and several trips to the National Archives – to bring to life the people who lived on these islands, how the twin forts of Hoo and Darnet were built, how the complex arrangement of river defences for Chatham Dockyard worked, the story of the pub which stood on an island in the middle of the estuary and how a WW1 German submarine ended up where it is now. It also takes a close up look at some of the flora and fauna of this huge, beautiful wilderness that is Medway estuary.
