Thames Waterman John Taylor’s portrait hangs in Watermen’s Hall and he frequently transported the leading writers of his day (Shakespeare and Ben Johnson) across the river to theatres like the Globe on his wherry. He tried to interest them in his writing and through this he got to know the Stuart royal family.

He became known as ‘The King’s Water Poet.‘  Christmas was banned by the Puritans during the English Civil War 375 years ago. Taylor famously stood up for Christmas and his personification of Christmas helped to establish the traditional image we have today of Father Christmas.  Freeman, Peter Daniel will host this screening of a short film and then a talk on Taylor and the attempt to ban Christmas.

Doors will open at 18:15 and refreshments served before the talk at 18:30.  Tickets are priced at £15*.
