Poors Fund

The Trustees of the Watermen’s Company Charities oversee various charitable aims and objectives. One of the charities under their direction is the Company’s Poor Fund which provides grants to impoverished Watermen and/or Lightermen of the River Thames, with assistance to their widows or widowers.

Moreover, the Company’s Charities offer accommodation for retired Freemen (and their widows or widowers) at Watermen’s Close in Hastings. Additionally, there is a significant number of elderly Freemen or their widows/widowers eligible to receive an allowance from the Poor’s Fund. Each year, the Trustees are able to provide a meaningful Christmas gift to those on the Compassionate List, thanks to the generosity of contributing Freemen. The kind donations help sustain this well-received allowance, as evident from the appreciative thank you letters and cards received, particularly during challenging and stressful times.

Quarterage

All Apprentices, Trainees, and Freemen are obliged to pay Quarterage to support the Annual Compassionate Allowance. The suggested contribution is £104.00 per year (for working Freemen), which can be paid through standing order on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. If you wish to contribute, please contact the Clerk for the necessary forms.

Additional Donations

Donations are always appreciated as the charities have numerous demands on their reserves. To make a donation, please contact [email protected]. Making a donation through Gift Aid is more tax-efficient, and the relevant forms can be provided upon request.
