Watermen’s Company Barge

The Master, John Salter, watched on 9th July 2016, the Thames Barge Driving Event and had a dream, that the Company should build its own barge to compete in an event where the PLA’s barge Blackwall seemed to win more often than not. Our Master was surprised when, after his Installation, the Court not only agreed with his suggestion but started to make donations to ensure it happened. Craft-Owning Freeman Bill Robinson offered to build the barge for a very modest sum.

6th June 2017 saw the launch of Apprentice Lighterman at South Dock Marina by Mrs Linda Salter, the Master’s wife and a blessing
by the Honorary Chaplain Revd Bertrand Olivier. Our Master would be the first to admit that there are a large number of Freemen who have contributed in time and effort, too many other than Bill Robinson to name here. This year’s Barge Driving Event is on
Saturday, 15th July starting at Greenwich at 1330. There are a few places available on the following vessels on a first come first served basis at £65 a head including lunch. Call Martin Laws at the Hall if you are interested.

Despite heavy rain the launch was very well attended by Freemen of all ages, including a party from the Almshouses at Hastings.
