The Ceremony of Beating the Bounds

Beating the Bounds dates back to medieval times, when each parish reaffirmed their boundaries by  processing to each boundary mark and beating them with wands whilst praying for their crops.

Every Ascension Day  the clergy  of All Hallows by the Tower, with students of St Dunstan’s College, participate in Beating the Bounds. In addition  members of the congregation are joined by Alderman and  Common Council of Tower Ward, plus Masters and Clerks of the Livery Companies and Working Guilds associated with the Church.

This year the Company of  Watermen and Lighermen was represented by the Master and Mistress, Mr Simon McCarthy and his wife Sally, Senior Warden Master Elect Dr Iain Reid and his lady Mrs Susan Keane, as well as the Beadle and the Assistant Clerk.
